Stillness

Graphite + Pastel Tutorial

A step-by-step guided statuary study for curios creatives seeking to capture the enchanting stories carved into stone by artists of yore.

Stillness is an innate energetic quality of Being (with a capital B).

Stillness is more than just a superficial definition of 'tranquillity, silence or absence of movement' it is a natural quality of being alive. However, as we become adults, it also becomes a choice. Stillness is living in a state of presence - not devoid of movement, but remaining connected to ourselves and present in our body. One's stillness is our 'beingness' - it is not affected by movement or action, it is not something we have to go in search of, but rather something we have to come back to. Modern life, commitments, and multitasking can easily take us away from presence from stillness. We become disconnected - from each other, from being, from ourselves.

That is why stillness is a choice, we have to choose not to be distracted, over-stimulated, overwrought, stressed.

Putting pencil to paper is for me a form of meditation, of connection, of stillness. I am connected to, a part of, and honouring both the creative divine and my subject. I am present, I am fully in my body, my brain and heart are having a singular conversation with my hand as a means of communion with my subject. It is profound, and a coming home.

Be inspired by this little lesson on sensitive sketching, of studying the stillness in sculpture,

and finding it in ourselves.

 Kind Words from Students

  • QUIET, ALMOST ZEN TEACHING

Natalie’s teaching is quiet and meditative, her voice is so calming, it is almost a zen experience!! I was able to feel supported in trying things I thought I would never be able to do, and I came away with a piece of art I am so proud of!
