The Wild Sketchbook
Carolina Wren from Wildlife art week
(Note Day 1 includes finding shapes for the wren and the lioness)
Welcome to Day ONE !
Today we are starting at the very beginning - finding shapes.
Learning to sketch from scratch is one of the most empowering things an artist can learn, and it is absolutely a skill set to continue to practise. So today we will start from the beginning, finding the simplest shapes, so that tomorrow, we can build on that further. We’re also going to have a chat about curiosity, and how it applies to art (and life!)
Let’s go!
Supplies Used
Remember: The exact supplies are not what makes the magic, that dear one, comes from you!
Sketchbook (I used Stillman& Birn Zeta Series 21x30cm/8.25x11.75”)
Pencil (I used a HB and 8B Faber-Castell Pitt Graphite Matt)
Let’s do the same as we did yesterday with the lioness, with the Carolina Wren today!
I find this process so enjoyable, and I hope that as you do it more and more you will also love leaning into your process too.
We’re also going to talk a bit about Courage in the eBook :)

Let’s play with colour today! Coloured pencils, to be exact.
If you do not have coloured pencils, or if you would rather not use them, this is a beautiful opportunity for you to render the reference we are doing in graphite - she would look lovely!
Our eBook is about connection - so multifaceted, and so abundant :)

We had two LIVE sketch and chat sessions, both of them included here!
Below is a pdf with the reference images :)
Session 1
Session 2
For our last project together we are playing with watercolours to render a wee wren in vibrant colours. Lots of light layers one on top of the other, drying in between, it takes time, but it is so worth it!
A rendering in graphite would also be beautiful,
if watercolours do not call to you.
I look forward to seeing what you are inspired to create!
We are also going to talk about congruence, and how living in our values as we create brings all the beauty of our practice to light (and love) :)

Watercolour Paint: I used the Ultimate Mixing set from Daniel Smith, which included the following colours: Raw Umber, Janes Grey, Buff Titan, Quinacridone Gold, Burnt Sienna, Indian Red, Hansa Yellow, Ultramarine Blue. You don’t need these exact colours, ones moderately close to them will be perfect.
White Gouache (optional)
